Email Transition:

Information Systems has coordinated the change of email usernames from the legacy firstname.lastname format to match the current myGate username structure. This change did not impact all users on campus. Most of our student population and employees who entered the university in the last 3 years were already using the new format.

Tech Coordinators for each college coordinated with IS during the Fall 2011 semester to move their Colleges/Schools. They handled communication and timing issues to best suit their user needs. Administrative units were transitioned by the Helpdesk staff. The Helpdesk coordinated the move with individual departments based on their needs. All remaining users (mostly students) were changed on February 13th, 2012.

Questions you may have:

How will people know my new address?

They won’t need to. Your legacy address (firstname.lastname) will remain as an Alias which means you will continue to receive mail sent to your old address –even after the transition. You will not lose any mail.

Will I have to change business cards, letterhead, brochures?

No. Mail sent to your legacy address (firstname.lastname) will still get to you.  Eventually you may want to update your materials as you reorder.

How long do I have to notify everyone that my address has changed?

Your legacy address will continue as an alias so as long as you like.  You will want to let people know about your new address by making a special note in your signature line or sending out an email to your address book.

Why are we doing this?

Our ultimate aim is to have the same user ID for all our major systems – Email, Blackboard, computer login (network login), and myGate. Blackboard was moved in August and network logins are in the process of being changed. Email is our last major system.

But my passwords are all different! I still have to juggle!

Once all the usernames have transitioned to this format we can develop a system to keep passwords in synch. That will be next.

How about listservs?

You will continue to receive listserv traffic (you won’t miss any mail). However if you regularly POST to a list or are the owner of a non-MSU list, you will need to sign back on to that list with your new address.  MSU listservs will be changed to use your new address automatically.

I read email on my phone. Will this affect it?

Yes. You will need to change your settings to read the new email address. Instructions for the most common phones (such as iPhone, Blackberry and some Android phones) are on the Support site under the "Email Address Changes" category.

Any other problems this may create for me?

• Android phones that were originally setup using your firstname.lastname@murraystate.edu email account will require a factory-default reset.  You will then need to setup your phone with a new address.  We recommend you create a personal email account to use with your Android phone.  Apps will also need to be downloaded again from the Marketplace.
• Google Talk/Chat users may need to reinvite their contacts to use chat.
• Outlook users will need to change some settings to begin checking mail using their new username.  Instructions will be available on the Support site under the "Email Address Changes" category.
• RacerMail users who use an automatic signature line will need to re-create that signature in their mail settings.  Instructions will be available on the Support site.
