The Blackboard database accepts "-" and "_" characters with no problem.  Characters such as :/#,().& can cause a problem with uploaded file names, assignments titles, etc.  The same is true for leaving spaces in file names.

Students submitting work should name files using alpha, numeric, dash, and underscores only. 

Instructors should name assignments/tests/etc with alpha, numeric, dash, and underscores only.
